St. Michael’s Hospital is embarking on a mission to become the world’s leading MS Centre. Until recently, MS clinics and research areas were scattered in separate wings and buildings on the SMH campus. Not only did this pose a challenge for patients with MS with mobility issues, but it hindered collaboration and educational opportunities between professionals and students. By creating an integrated space on the 16th and 17th floors of the Peter Gilgan Tower, the new BARLO MS Centre provides patient-centred, comprehensive and personalized care in a welcoming, positive, and caring environment. Our design for the MS Centre fosters intellectual integration and social cohesion, energizes new research, enables innovative new ways to care for patients, and provides for meaningful public outreach and education. The facility is connected to its setting with views to the City – a distinctive illumined presence, connected and anchored.

The ‘in between’ spaces will be as important as the functional laboratories, promoting communication across disciplines, allowing for ideas to merge and enabling a casual and fluid sharing of knowledge.
