The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (PMCC) Space Transformation Project is a complete overhaul of PMCC’s ground floor, as well as some staff work areas. HPA’s approach to the Transformation Project is to prioritize the patient experience; emphasizing that the patients are at the centre of their individual treatment plans and are partners in their care. Beautiful, uplifting spaces empower patients and their families through the use of light, landscape, art, and materials.
With multiple entrances and passageways, navigating the existing ground floor was a challenge as a result of additions and changes made on an as-needed basis over time. HPA’s design enhances wayfinding and allows for effortless navigation through the new, open concept space. The ground floor of PMCC is where the journey toward healing begins. The warm and welcoming environment is a restorative setting for patients’ care, with dignified, de-institutionalized spaces conveying the level of personalized care that Princess Margaret delivers. Amenities and services support their various needs and create an environment where a person could comfortably spend the day.

The main entrances were enhanced, elevating the institution’s street presence and providing accessible entry. Regrading, recladding, landscaping, and the addition of glass vestibules at the entry areas makes arrival inviting and accessible.
