The new Science and Physics (SCI-PHYS) Building at the University of Waterloo will provide dynamic spaces for interactive learning while creating a new centre for innovation on campus. Initially conceived as a lab facility focused on genetics, molecular biochemistry, and pharmaceutical research, the project later merged with the physics program to form a “SCI-PHYS” complex. The design encourages creative gatherings and will foster the cross-pollination of knowledge and ideas between faculty, students, and visitors around a central ‘hive’ space. Various faculties will be housed in intersecting forms wrapped in a continuous glazed and solid façade system.
Designed to Passive House methodologies, SCI-PHYS will incorporate energy-efficient design features such as a 60:40 solid wall-to-glazing construction, zero carbon-ready mechanical systems, and a high-performance envelope that maximizes natural light and public visibility. The new building will form a courtyard by connecting to existing buildings on site, bringing light and activity to the centre of the building and establishing a new science hub on campus.
